Drawing has been a part of the artist life in one form or another since childhood. The material were always around as her father created and designed decor for his window dressing or set designing. There in the living rooms of the apartments they lived on the Main in Montreal, he did his work, and it fascinated her no end. There he showed her how to use his tool pastels, paints, sketching and observation, perspective, gradation of light to dark and color theory and way more. He encouraged her to explore and to take as much space as needed to express what needed to be expressed. During her formal studies, drawing was a sort of basic training that would allow the development of many of her ideas, designs, visions and feelings that require conceptual and/or realistic knowledge of representational techniques. Printmaking techniques like Lithography and Intaglio made an impression on her works as well. An interest in Japanese art forms develloped, compositions styles and ink brush techniques started to become a source of inspiration while studying Impressionism, certainly after learning they had been influenced by this ancient Asian culture's graphic traditions. After some years it became clear that her mindsets was way too critical and made it more and more difficult to create drawings and works that were to her satisfaction. So, influenced by her experience in Improvisational theatre, automatic drawing techniques came in to play, there the mind has little place and she could start exploring whatever may come to her with no forethought and this improved immensely the pleasure felt in doing the work and eventually, the quality of the work. This lead to notions of flow and became a clarifying concept and a technical tool as well that would open her work up to more yet unrevealed resources of the imagination. As well from her teenage years studying all sorts of patterns perceived in nature or design/architecture, and their continual practice needed abled her to draw freehand with a ink pen on paper and remained a staple in her practices. Taking many years of exploration to identify and catalogue dozens of patterns and the continual pleasure of discovering new ones.
Drawing from imagination is an important ability to achieve. Continuing in that path is always stimulating and ever challenging.
